Marine

Our approach

We have dedicated Marine Divisions in both the UK and the USA offering a huge scope of electrical and industrial products. Our services extend to major international brands in the maritime industry and small boat owners alike. We can support complete electrical and industrial maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) supply to owners and fleet managers and also provide design support and complete supply for refit or new build projects. Our services encompass the relevant supply chain management expertise, ensuring these time-sensitive projects are delivered on time, to the right specification, and to ABS marine standard approval where required.

Cable and electrical supply for US shipyard

As part of our service offering, we took care of all aspects of supply chain management for each project. This encompassed procurement, cable cutting and drumming, expediting, packing, documentation/approval certificates, and shipping. We supplied full cable packages for new build vessels comprising power, data, network, fire resistant, fire retardant, and variable frequency drive (VFD) cables, together with associated cable accessories and penetrations.

Projects of this type often have very specific criteria. For example, our team of experts worked closely with our extensive supplier network to identify products that met or exceeded ABS marine standard approval. In addition, weight and space are two key factors that also need to be taken into consideration on board vessels. We are well placed to supply a range of lightweight and flexible cables that help to facilitate that. As a result, we not only delivered these orders to specification and deadline, but we also played our part in helping these vessels to reduce their fuel emissions, through reduced load.

Low-location emergency lighting solutions for cruise ships

If you’ve travelled onboard a cruise ship, you might have noticed the long strips of emergency lighting on every deck, which is used to guide you to a muster point in the event of an emergency. When the products (used as spare parts in these systems) were discontinued, we were brought in to provide a new solution for a number of major cruise lines.

Working in partnership with the manufacturer, we undertook a thorough survey of each vessel’s low-location lighting system. We submitted a design concept that allowed the client to retain the existing structure thereby avoiding damage to, and the costly replacement of, carpets.

We then put together the build requirements, and took charge of procurement, expediting, packing, documentation, shipping, installation, testing, and marine standard certification. The products supplied included signal cables, circuit power supplies, exit signs/modules, LED symbols, and consumables such as solder sleeves, resistors, and end terminals. Not only did we help our clients improve safety onboard, but we also delivered a significant cost-saving solution (1) through the preservation of the existing structure, and (2) by repurposing the spare parts from the old structure on other ships, prior to their upgrades.

Preventative UPS maintenance projects for major cruise lines

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a critical component that ensures continuity and stability in the power supply onboard ships. To ensure that UPS units are reliable, robust, and suitable for maritime conditions, they must undergo maintenance reviews every five and ten years, to certification body standards.

We partnered with the manufacturer to provide the necessary spare replacement parts identified during the review process, for upward of ten ships located across the globe. These included capacitors, fans, air filters, control boards, interface boards, and other accessories. A certified manufacturer Engineer then carried out the preventative maintenance on each UPS, some of which were used for IT, navigation, and machinery.

This service enables the ship operators to remain compliant with certification body requirements. It also reduces the safety and security risk to the vessel, prevents loss of communications at sea, and ensures the smooth running of the ship.

LED lighting upgrades for cruise ships

With the ban on fluorescent tubes now apparent across Europe, many of our cruise and marine customers have turned to R&M for a solution. Working with our preferred lighting partners and our customer we have developed long term agreements to provide the best use of modern LED technology. Ensuring they receive a fast and lasting solution that saves energy. Standardising across ships means we can offer not only a superior technical solution but a superior commercial outcome also.

Some of the upgrades required procurement, expediting, and delivery of new lamps for the entire ship, complete with the required technical documentation. Whilst others involved a complete solution from thorough surveys, recommendations, and project management, right through to procurement, expediting, delivery, and onsite installation. These larger-scale projects catered to both dimmable and non-dimmable requirements to ensure that the right lighting effect, and resulting passenger experience, were achieved for the various venues onboard.

Not only did these upgrades ensure that each client met their regulatory compliance obligations, but they also significantly improved energy efficiency on board, thereby reducing their environmental impact.
