R&M are very proud to have won the prestigious Hampshire Business Awards KPMG “Company of the Year” Award at yesterday’s  Gala  Ceremony Dinner.

Facing stiff competition from the other two finalists in this category –  Lymington Precision Engineers and Pabulum – R&M are proud to join the esteemed company of  The Southern Cooperative and the Whitely based defence firm Chemring Group , previous winners of the Company of the Year Award (2010 and 2009 respectively).

Commenting on the win, Will Smith, partner at KPMG’s South Coast office, said: “R&M is a well-deserving winner of the Company of the Year Award. It is a truly international business delivering sophisticated products to a demanding global audience as evidenced in particular by the gas project in Australia. The team here at KPMG wish R&M every success for the future and hope that it will inspire other local firms to expand into global markets.”

Celebrating their 21st year the Hampshire Business Awards annually acknowledge and reward the most exceptional businesses within the Hampshire area, celebrating their flair, innovation and strength, both as an internal organisation and through their contribution to local communities.

This year the awards were held in association with the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), who joins the awards sponsors – Bond Pearce, KPMG and the Royal Bank of Scotland in assessing local organisations in the categories of:

  • The Bond Pearce Innovation Award
  • KPMG Company of the Year
  • RBS Management Team of the Year

The KPMG Company of the Year award seeks to recognise an organisation in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight that has an “outstanding financial track record and a strong commitment to increasing profitability”.

To be considered for the award, a company must display the ability to think strategically in terms of industry developments and general economic issues and illustrate its plans for future growth.  In addition, it will need to exhibit a strong ethical conscience in relation to its employees and the environment it operates in.

Previous winners of this prestigious award have been able to demonstrate their dedication to the quality of the products and services they provide, in conjunction with a dynamic approach to innovation.  They have been local organisations that have achieved all round business excellence, not only in terms of financial performance, but also in the areas of strategic direction, people, products and the services they offer.

For an organisation to be nominated for the KPMG Company of the Year Award (www.hampshirebusinessawards.co.uk) it has to demonstrate:

  • That it is a leader in its own market
  • That it is dedicated to excellence of product and services supplied
  • Its dynamic approach to quality and innovation
  • Its ability to think strategically
  • It ability to keep abreast of new developments both in its own industry and the wider economy
  • Plans for future growth
  • A strong commitment to its employees needs and aspirations
  • Its contribution to Hampshire’s environment through sustainable business practises

During his recent interview for the Hampshire Business Awards Andrew Chandler (Director) commented:

“R&M feel extremely privileged to be selected as one of the finalists in the KPMG Company of the Year category as it is a way of recognising all of the employees contributions within the group that have enabled us to grow throughout the past three turbulent years.

Like many businesses the recession made us look long and hard at the performance of each and every one of our operating divisions and like many companies it became apparent that tough decisions would need to be made in order to protect the group and survive the downturn. Decisions were made to restructure the company and to refocus our efforts on our best performing businesses rather than our weakest, often during a recession too much time and energy can be focussed on the underperforming areas of a company….

As a direct result of these actions we have enjoyed three years of consecutive growth, during this time turnover has increased by 20% to 48 million gbp….

We haven’t forgotten where we started back in 1987 and are very proud of our reputation as a Hampshire born and bred internationally renowned company. We continue to support local companies and charities whenever possible and sponsor many sports clubs based in the Hampshire area. Being Southampton based has been a major advantage to our businesses due to the superb infrastructure in terms of rail, road and port facilities and the international trade links that Southampton has historically enjoyed over many centuries”
